But, “the unfortunate reality is that most often there are no symptoms – or that the symptoms are so ambiguous and vague that they are discounted,” she says. “It’s not until the person seeks medical care for some other issue, or has reached extreme progression of their disease, that they come to know that they have kidney disease.”

Wei stresses the importance of screening at-risk groups for kidney disease, regardless of symptoms.
