Renal and Urology News: COVID’s Long-Tail Effects on Kidney Health — A Q&A with Strive Health Chief Nephrologist Keith Bellovich, D.O., MBA
Author : Strive HealthThe COVID-19 pandemic may have provoked a kidney disease crisis. Individuals with COVID-19 have a 2.3-fold increased risk of acute kidney injury (AKI), a 1.4-fold increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and a 4.7-fold increased risk of progression to kidney failure compared with persons with influenza, according to a study of more than 3 million patients published in Communications Medicine. Kidney cells express high levels of the primary protein receptors that SARS-CoV-2 uses to enter and infect cells, and some also produce enzymes (ACE2, TMPRSS2, and other proteases) that aid entry. It’s imperative that kidney damage does not go undetected.
In this Q&A, Strive Health’s Chief Nephrologist Keith Bellovich, D.O., MBA, discusses the implications of these and other study findings for CKD screening and early detection.
